Inspiration for my blog comes from all sorts of places. Recently I was asked, “Do men do Pilates?” First thought in my head was “Yes, and they also wear pink!”. Second thought was that “If they have human physiology then yes! Third thought was “If they get in and out of cars and climb stairs, yes again! Next thought was “If they golf, play pickleball, or ski then yes! If they fitness walk, garden, or hike, yes again!” Final thought was “That will make a great blog!”
Pilates focuses on the strength and length of muscles in the entire body with an emphasis on our CORE. Technically, core muscles include our abdominals, gluteal/hip muscles and lumbar spine muscles. Functionally the CORE is our body from shoulders to our thighs, including our head and neck.We can’t even get out of bed without utilizing these muscles. If you are a guy (or woman) and you get out of your bed daily, get dressed daily, sit and stand up throughout the day, and get back into bed, you frequently utilize your core muscles. An article by (Rogers and Page, 2005). Suggests that there is a functional continuum that begins with the development of cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance and flexibility. However, greater improvements in functional mobility will be realized …. Incorporating generic movement patterns such as pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, twisting, lunges and squats. In Pilates we focus on all the muscles that produce these actions. We do exercises standing upright as well as lying face down, face up and on our side while on an exercise mat (Mat Pilates). In Gap Fitness Studio classes, we combine Pilates moves with exercises from various forms of exercise to create long strong functionally fit bodies. Back to the original question “Do men do Pilates”. Yes, they do, and they are more healthy and fit because they do.
If you are a man (or woman) that loves to GOLF, play(s) PICKLEBALL, LIFT(S) WEIGHTS, do(es) CROSSFIT, play(s) TENNIS or WALK(S) FOR FITNESS, attending our Pilates/Yoga Fusion, Body Fit and Gentle Yoga classes will enhance your performance in the sport you enjoy. With experience in Sports Performance Fitness coaching, I design classes to increase both integral power as well as flexibility. Improving these components ENHANCES SPORTS PERFORMANCE, as well as DECREASES THE LIKELIHOOD OF INJURY. A golf instructor can instruct us on how to hold the club, rotate the body and swing the club. Pilates will increase one’s flexibility and core strength so that your body can better execute what your golf (or any sport) instructor suggests.
To conclude:
YES, MEN DO PILATES, AND THEY USUALLY LOOK GREAT IN PINK.
Thanks for your interest in your fitness
